KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — The study on new toll rates at ten expressways, which should have raised their rates this year, has been completed, Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor told Dewan Rakyat.

He said decision whether the toll rates would be raised or the government would continue to pay concession companies compensation would be made after the study was discussed at the Cabinet meeting.

“The government is cautious when deciding new toll rates as we have to take into account the rates imposed on users,” he said in reply to a question by Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Serdang) who asked whether the government would raise the toll rates.

The Economic Planning Unit (EPU) study includes the North-South Expressway (NSE) and the East Coast Expressway (ECE), the two expressway used by most Malaysian motorists

Shaziman also told Teo that the toll discount and exemption given during Chinese New Year involved RM1.3 million, and was borne by the 17 concession companies.

“It is a government initiative and the concession companies are willing to participate to celebrate the festive season in the spirit of 1 Malaysia.”

Shaziman denied Teo’s claim that the toll discount and exemption were insignificant as the concession companies made huge profits.

He said this was because the concession companies incurred high cost to maintain and upgrade the expressways. — Bernama
